What to expect from the UK’s weather…

09 February 2017

It is fair to say that the UK’s run of particularly wet and stormy weather will continue over the course of this winter. Looking over the Met Offices statistics from December 2013 to January 2014 can we expect more of the same this year?

Below Figure.1 & Table.1 shows the provisional statistics for the full month of January 2014 from the Met Office National Climate Information Centre:

Equalling the fifth wettest December in the national history which dates back to 1910 and the second wettest January – combining these two months together in theory make them the wettest December and January in the series! This is reiterated with the amount of days of rain in January with 23 days of rainfall over 1mm.

Over this period it can be deduced that in Southern parts of England statistics suggest that it endured one of the most extensive periods of rainfall in over a century.

Possibly the biggest question is ‘Are we set for an even higher rainfall over this coming winter period?’ In the short there is no hard and fast answer to this, however it is better to be prepared for this eventuality.
